Cross is still hooked on Martha and i think that it's ridiculous. All this time he has never done anything to show her how he relly feels abot her unitl they once met again. But I'm a little confused about Martha. She is either not at all attractive to men because she never married after all these years; she has dedicated herself on helping other people. or she just really does not like him the way he feels about her. LT. Cross is a hopless dreamer. In the end he still thinks that Martha will eventually chage her nmind and come back to him and love him the way he wants her to.The big idea of this passage is unrequited love. O;Brien wants to show his readers that not only did the soldiers from Vietnam War were fighting for their lives and their country, most of them were also fighting for the ones they love. There they were trying to be heroes at such a young age but in reality all thery're gettin are everydody else own problems on their shoulders. instead of finishing college and having a family all of them end up taking all sorts
