Cross is the only person who talks about someone he loves and seem to care about other people which relate to how he is has the responsibility for lives of his men" which is why he carry a strobe light. "The big man" Henry carries a M-60 which is a light machine gun but also carries "pound cake". Tim chose to characterize Henry as "the big man" but could be sweet on the inside, and as for Cross he carries the responsebility which characterize him as a thoughtful caring man.

Ms. Pettit TheTim O' Brian uses extended metaphors to characterize the characters in the novel The Things They CarriedCarried. In one passage the author states what these soldiers carried that was necessary to the war and that would by any means make them survive. Tim named the things that were essential but he also named what they carried for mental reasons that classified their rank that was connected to their well being.

After all these years, Lt. Cross is still hooked on Martha and i think that it's ridiculous. All this time he has never done anything to show her how he relly feels abot her unitl they once met again. But I'm a little confused about Martha. She is either not at all attractive to men because she never married after all these years; she has dedicated herself on helping other people. or she just really does not like him the way he feels about her. LT. Cross is a hopless dreamer. In the end he still thinks that Martha will eventually chage her nmind and come back to him and love him the way he wants her to.The big idea of this passage is unrequited love. O;Brien wants to show his readers that not only did the soldiers from Vietnam War were fighting for their lives and their country, most of them were also fighting for the ones they love. There they were trying to be heroes at such a young age but in reality all thery're gettin are everydody else own problems on their shoulders. instead of finishing college and having a family all of them end up taking all sorts
